An attack on a convoy of refugees in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk has left no survivors, reports said Tuesday.
According to the BBC, that cited a rebel source, the attack on the convoy that was carrying women and children, killed all.
Soldiers recovered 15 bodies from the site of attack in Luhansk, where heavy fighting is on between the rebels and the government forces, Ukrainian military spokesman said.
The heavy fighting in the rebel-controlled territory is preventing the recovery of more bodies, an officer told reporters.
A senior Ukrainian spokesman said the rebels used Russian-made mortars and rocket launchers. The spokesman said the convoy of buses was flying white flags as it traveled along the main road away from the city of Luhansk.
“Many people were killed, among them women and children,” Lysenko said of the attack, which occurred between the towns of Khryashchuvate and Novosvitlivka. “We are not able to count the death toll at this point.”
A separatist leader has denied the rebels attacked the civilians, and blamed the deaths on Ukrainian forces.
There were no immediate further details.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf condemned the attack, saying innocent civilians who were trying to get away from the fighting became victims of it. Harf said the U.S. cannot confirm who was responsible.
Luhansk has been the scene of some of the heaviest fighting in recent weeks between the separatists and Ukrainian troops.
