I agree with a lot of those comments. There’s a few notable exclusions from the world of popular fiction (including genre fiction) that had a significant impact. The list definitely skews into mainly literary fiction, historical fiction and selected nonfiction / autobiography. It’s not accounting for the wider world of books.

I have to admit I haven’t read a lot of them. But I see some very common themes – a lot of books are historical fiction set in America or are contemporary books that serve as commentary on the current state of America in some way. I’m not surprised the New York Times went for a highly America-centric list but I do think a lot of it is pushing a certain message. It’s definitely the opinion of a certain publication, even if they got a lot of experts to co tribute there’s obviously curation going on here.
